This subset of our library catalog is an index to obituaries in Chattanooga newspapers from 1897 through 2003. The index provides the name of the deceased, newspaper name, and date of the obituary.

In order to search efficiently for obituary records:

ALWAYS change the Limit By: drop down to "Obituaries"
Type the last name first, followed by a comma.

Entries prior to 1951 were made on a selective basis. If you know the exact date of death but do not find a listing for the person you seek, the staff can check the papers.

Please contact the Local History Department for obituaries after 2003.

You may request copies of an obituary by writing to the Local History Department. Prepayment is required. Fees are:

Registered library borrowers $5.00 handling fee plus $1.00 per microfilm copy
Non–registered borrowers $10.00 handling fee plus $1.00 per microfilm copy

Example: Cost to a non-registered borrower for 1 obituary is $11.00, for 2 is $12.00, or for 10 is $20.00.

NOTE: Length and placement of the obituary in the paper may require more than one copy. You will be advised if there is an additional charge.
