Search Tips for the
Chattanooga Photo Database

• Do not be too specific in your search: use general keywords.
  
• Limit searches by using "and", "or", and "not".
  
• Do not abbreviate. Exceptions are St. used for Saint and an ampersand (&) used when part of an official name.
  
• Search numerically named streets by number.
  
• Try singular as well as plural forms of words or use truncation or wildcard searching, e.g., industr* retrieves industry, industries, industrial, etc.
  
• Searches may be limited by date.
  
  • Broad Street [d<1880] retrieves images prior to 1880
  • Broad Street [d>1880] retrieves images after 1880
  • Broad Street [d=1880] retrieves images for only 1880
    
    
  • NOTE: For entries with a range of dates, the search retrieves only the beginning and ending dates.
  
  
• Click on the link for matches retrieved to display the thumbnail, title, and date. The date reflects the time period of the image.
  
• Click on the title to view descriptive record.
  
• View the larger images by clicking the thumbnail or "Larger Image" link in the record.
  
• To search for general views or aerial shots, use:
  
  • Aerial view,
  • Cityscapes, or
  • Street photography
    
• Search by the last number in the record under "Location" to quickly access previously viewed images.
  
• Use the navigation links on the search page.
  
• Be sure to click "Exit" to end session.
